Course Information

Instructor: Bruce Driver (driver@math.ucsd.edu), AP&M 7414, 534-2648.   Office Hours: Wednesday, 1-2 PM and Friday, 2-3 PM.

TA: Tai Melcher (tmelcher@math.ucsd.edu)  AP&M 6402E.   Office Hours: Monday, 3-4:30 PM and Friday, 12-1:30PM

Meeting times: Lectures are on MWF 10:00 -- 10:50 AM, in Peterson 102. Sections are on Mondays in WLH 2206 at 5:00 PM for A01 and 6:00 PM for A02.

Textbook: Fourier Series and Boundary Value Problems, by James Ward Brown and Ruel V. Churchill, McGraw-Hill, 6th Edition. There will also be some extra notes which will be distributed on this web-page at "Lecture Notes."

Prerequisites:
Math. 20D (or 21D) and 20F, or consent of instructor. (Part of my goal in this course is to show you that 20F is really relevant to you.)

Homework: Homework is due at the beginning of the class on Monday (unless otherwise specified). It will be selectively graded and returned. You are encouraged to get help with the homework, and work together on it. Just copying someone else's work of course does no good to anyone, but cooperative effort and discussion of problems can be very effective in learning mathematics. No late homework will be accepted.  Please see the Home-work  page for all homework assignments.

Test times: Test #1: Wednesday, April 21 at 10:00 AM. Test #2: Wednesday, May 12 at 10:00 AM.  Final exam: Tuesday, June 8 at 8:00 -- 11:00 AM.

Grading: Final Grade = 2 midterms (25% each) + final (35%) + homework (15%).

Course Summary

Goals of the Course-This is a course in Partial Differential Equations with applications to engineering and physics.  We will introduce you to the ideas of Fourier series, orthogonal expansions, and eigenvalue problems.  They will be used to solve some partial differential equations.  There will be three types of problems which we will consider: the heat equation, the wave equation and the potential equation. Problems of these kinds are amenable to separation of variables which reduce the problems to ordinary differential equations. Homework can be long and involve complicated integration problems. A minor error in calculation will produce an incorrect solution. Part of the course, therefore, is developing the facility to check over your answers and to write up your work clearly so that an error can be easily detected.

Prerequisites- Math 20D and 20F or consent of the instructor. Students will have to review ordinary differential equations, integration by parts, substitution, partial derivatives, and also the use of integral tables. Sine, cosine, hyperbolic sine and hyperbolic cosine and well as some ideas in linear algebra will be applied in this course. Also, we will be using the ideas of linear transformation, kernel, orthonormal functions and basis as described in Math 20F.
