Errett A. Bishop Memorial Scholarship
This is a scholarship provided by Bishop's family in honor of him. The scholarship is maintained by the UCSD Mathematics Department. Errett Bishop was one of the first Mathematics Department faculty members at UCSD. Awards are usually made in the Spring term of every school year and outstanding undergraduate Mathematics students at UCSD are among those considered for the scholarship. Applications must be submitted and can obtained through the financial aid office.
The Computer Science, Engineering and Mathematics Scholarship (CSEMS) Program
CSEMS is a new two-year program for upper-division undergraduates majoring in computer science, engineering or mathematics. The primary objective of the CSEMS program is to provide educational opportunities to low-income, academically talented students through scholarships that promote full-time enrollment and degree achievement in higher education.
CSEMS Eligibility:
Special consideration will be given to Native Americans (American Indians and Alaskan Natives), African Americans, Native Pacific Islanders (Polynesians and Micronesians), Hispanics/Latinos, women, and persons with disabilities.
Applicants must be:
US citizens, nationals, or aliens admitted as refugees
Eligible for a Pell Grant
Enrolled full time in a CSEMS degree program at UCSD
At least a junior standing as of Fall Quarter 2000
Minimum UCSD GPA of 2.60
And not planning to graduate before June, 2002.
The Goldwater Scholarship
This scholarship is prestigious in terms of recognition and award level. For 1999-2000, two UCSD students were awarded. In 1998-1999, four students received the Goldwater Scholarship.
Listed below are the basic criteria and award information. For detailed scholarship application requirements, please refer to the guidelines enclosed with the application. The faculty Committee on Undergraduate Scholarships and Honors will select the UCSD nominees and submit the candidates to the Goldwater Foundation for final review.
Goldwater Scholarship Criteria:
Full time sophomore or junior (for 2000-2001)
Career Objective: Mathematics, Natural Sciences, or Engineering
Research experience
GPA of at least a "B" in upper fourth of studentis class
US Citizen or Resident Alien with Alien Registration Card and letter of intent to obtain citizenship
Award:
Up to $7,500 annually
To cover tuition, fees, books, room and board
UCSD can nominate 4 candidates
300 Goldwater scholarships will be awarded
The Rueben H. Fleet Memorial Scholarship
This scholarship is for students in the Science, Engineering and Mathematics Department:
Five Scholarships of $5,000 each are available.
Students who will be juniors or seniors at the universtiy level in 2000/2001 school year and are pursuing degrees in Science, Engineering or Mathematics are welcome to apply.
To qualify for this scholarship, students must:
Have a minimum of 54 semester units or 72 quarter units completed.
Have a minimum grade point average of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale.
Have already declared a major in Science, Engineering, or Mathematics.
How to apply:
Complete an application (there are a few copies available in the Math Advising Office which is located in AP&M 2313).
Write a personal statement and answer the following questions
1) What are your reasons for attending college?
2) Why did you choose your course of study?
3) What career goals do you have?
Submit two letters of recommendation.
Attach a list of extra curricular/community activities with which you are involved.
Attach a list of your academic honors/awards.
Alice T. Schafer Prize 2000

ELEVENTH ANNUAL ALICE T. SCHAFER MATHEMATICS PRIZE FOR EXECELLENCE IN MATHEMATICS BY AN UNDERGRADUATE WOMAN
One of our own math majors, Mari Campbell, was the 1999 recipient of this prestigious award. Now the Executive Committee of the Association for Women in Mathematics calls for nominations for the Alice T. Schafer Mathematics Prize to be awarded to an undergraduate woman for excellence in mathematics. All members of the mathematical community are invited to submit nominations for the Prize. The nominee may be at any level in her undergraduate career. Nominees must either be a U.S. citizen or have a school address in the United States.
The Schafer Prize was established in 1990 by the Executive Committee of the AWM and is named for the AWM former president and one of the founding members, Alice T. Schafer, who contributed a great deal to women in mathematics throughout her career.
The tenth annual Schafer Prize will be awarded at the Joint Prize Session at the Joint Mathematics Meetings in Washington, D.C. January 10-23, 2001.
The letters of nomination should include, but not be limited to, an evaluation of the nominee on the following criteria:
Quality of performance in advanced mathematics courses and special programs
Demonstration of real interest in mathematics
Ability for independent work in mathematics
Performance in mathematical competitions at the local or national level, if any
With letter of nomination, please include a copy of transcripts and indicate undergraduate level. Additional supporting materials, (e.g. reports from summer work using math, copies of talks given by members of student chapters, recommendations letters from professors, colleagues, etc.), should be enclosed with the nomination, if applicable.

Hispanic Scholarship Fund
Awards Generally Range From: $500 to $2,500
For Community College, Four Year, & Graduate Students
MINIMUM ELIGIBILTY REQUIREMENTS
Be at least half Hispanic background (one parent fully Hispanic, or both parents half Hispanic)
Be a full time student at an accredited college
Be a U.S. Citizen or a Permanent Resident of the U.S.
Have completed a minimum of 15 college units
Have a minimum Grade Point Average of 2.5 on a 4.0 scale (3.5 on a 5.0 scale)
