John W. Evans graduated from Cornell Medical School in 1958. He interned at the New York Hospital and completed a residency in Neurology at Bellevue Hospital and the New York Hospital, finishing in 1962.
He went to Los Angeles as a fellow at UCLA's Neuropsychiatric Institute and then transferred to UCLA's graduate program in Mathematics. During graduate school he worked at IBM's Western Data Processing Center located at UCLA.
He received his Ph.D. in Mathematics in 1966 and then went to the Mathematical Research Branch, NIAMD, National Institutes of Health in Bethesda, MD and served in the Public Health Service for two years.
He came to UCSD in 1968 with a joint appointment in the School of Medicine and the Department of Mathematics. His research areas are Nerve Axon Equations, Pulmonary Gas Exchange and assorted applied mathematics problems.
