Dr. Kemp received his Ph.D. from Cornell in 2005. He held an Escobar Assistant Professorship at Cornell during 2005-2006, and was then a CLE Moore Instructor at MIT from 2006-2009, before joining the faculty at UCSD in 2009. Dr. Kemp's research is in Probability Theory and Functional Analysis, especially in random matrices, free probability theory, heat kernel analysis, and functional inequalities.Dr. Kemp has advised two PhD students so far, one at MIT and one at UCSD. He has been heavily involved in undergraduate research, advising many senior honors theses, and an REU project. As part of his NSF CAREER Award, he has designed a new Collaborative Undergraduate Research Experience (CURE) which will run in the summers 2014-2018. He is also involved with outreach to high school students: since 2010, he has chaired the San Diego Honors Math Contest, the oldest math competition in the city, which attracts hundreds of participants from around the county each year.
