Financial Aid

Students admitted to the PhD program typically receive financial aid in the form of a teaching assistantship (TAship) or a research assistantship (RAship) for a period of four years. In past years, we have been able to fund PhD students for a 5th year. We currently do not provide financial aid for any Masters students.

The Graduate Program also receives funds in the form of a San Diego Fellowship or a Cota Robles Fellowship. These fellowships are awarded to new and incoming students. Nominations are made by the Math Department and then these nominations are brought before a campuswide committee. This committee considers many criteria including whether the student has successfully overcome significant educational, social, cultural, or economic disadvantage or adversity in a way that would enable him or her to contribute to the campus community in a manner that enhances campus diversity. See http://ogsr.ucsd.edu/fellowships/sd_fellowship/ index.htm. Recipients of these awards can receive up to $18,000 per year along with preferences in graduate student housing and possible summer support if they are mentored by a faculty member. Students are encouraged to apply for these fellowships at the same time that they submit their application for admission.

The Math Department recently received a Grant in Areas of National Need (GAANN grant) from the federal government. This grant allows us to fund four to five GAANN Fellow PhD students per year who demonstrate financial need and are committed to becoming professors upon obtaining their PhD. First year GAANN Fellows are paid at least as much as a TA with a maximum of $30,000 for one year and generally have a reduced teaching load during their first year of study. Students interested in applying for this fellowship have to be already admitted to the PhD program. Upon admission they can fill out a FAFSA form http://www.fafsa.ed.gov and submit it to the Office of Graduate Studies and Research.

Students who will be completing their PhD in the next year may apply for the Fletcher Jones or Presidential Dissertation Fellowships. Candidates for these fellowships are nominated by the Graduate Vice Chair and submitted to the Office of Graduate Studies.
