B.A. Degree in Applied Mathematics

Effective Fall 2001

This program is intended for students planning to work on the interface between Mathematics and other fields or who may want to go to graduate school in Applied Mathematics.

Lower Division Requirements

1. Math 20A-B Calculus for Science and Engineering
  Math 20C Calculus and Analytical Geometry
  Math 20D Introduction to Differential Equations
  Math 20E Vector Calculus
  Math 20F Linear Algebra
2. One of the following:
  MAE 9 C/C++ Programming
  MAE 10 FORTRAN for Engineers
  CSE 8A/AL-B Introduction to Computer Science: Java
  CSE 11 Introduction to Computer Science: Java (Accelerated Pace)

Upper Division Requirements

1. Math 109 Mathematical Reasoning (Should be taken sophomore year)
2. One of the following:
  Math 102 Applied Linear Algebra
  or  
  Math 170A Numerical Linear Algebra
3. One of the following:
  Math 142A-B Advanced Calculus (Should be taken junior year)
  or  
  Math 140A-B Foundations of Analysis
4. One of the following sequences:
  Math 180A-B-C-181A Probability and Statistics
  or  
  Math 180A-181A and any two from 181B-C-D-E
  or  
  (Math 183 or 180A-181A) and any three from 170A-B-C-172-173
5. One additional sequence from the list #4 above or from the following list:
  Math 110-120A-130A Partial Differential Equations (PDE),Complex Analysis, Ordinary Differential Equations
  Math 120A-B Complex Analysis
  Math 130A-132A Ordinary and Partial Diff. Equations and Integral Equations
  Math 155A-B Computer Graphics
  Math 171A-B Mathematical Programming - Numerical Optimization
  Math 193A-B Actuarial Mathematics

At least 13 four-unit, upper-division mathematics courses, except:

a. Up to 3 four-unit upper-division courses may be outside the department in an approved applied mathematical area. A petition approved by an applied math adviser is required. No such units may also be used for a minor or program of concentration.

b. MAE 107, Econ. 120A-B-C, Math. 195, 196, 197, 199, and 199H cannot be counted toward the upper-division requirements.

To be prepared for a strong major curriculum, students should complete the last three quarters of the 20 sequence and Mathematics 109 before the end of their sophomore year.
