Why attend UCSD?

Since its founding in 1960, UCSD has quickly risen from an isolated ocean research institute to one of the premier universities in the nation. Located on 1,200 acres of coastal woodland just north of the city of San Diego, the campus boasts one of the best climates (see live webcam of the UCSD Price Center West plaza) of any university in the world - and the educational climate is equally ideal. With strong traditions of interdisciplinary scholarship and entrepreneurial innovation, the university will continue its growth in the new century.

UCSD is a young school - and a place of boundless energy and growth. Of the top ten public universities listed by US News and World Report in 2003, UCSD was the only one founded within the last 75 years. In fact, the only other school in the top ten founded since the end of the 19th Century was UCLA (founded in 1919).

As one of the top research institutions in the nation, UCSD attracts leaders and innovators in all fields of study. Students learn from the 'best and the brightest' and are always on 'the cutting edge.'

Additionally, UCSD has developed a novel residential college system that supplements the educational benefits of a research university with the individual supports of a smaller liberal-arts college. The six colleges of UCSD each have their own general education requirements designed around a unique educational philosophy while sharing the Departmental Majors.

Why major in Mathematics?

Mathematics is a fundamental and powerful intellectual tool. It provides a commonality among modern scientific and technological fields. It prepares students for whatever path they might wish to follow, by providing a thorough backing in logical thinking, problem-solving, and abstract analysis.

But don't take our word for it...

For the things of this world cannot be made known without a knowledge of mathematics.
   -- Roger Bacon

Most of the fundamental ideas of science are essentially simple, and may, as a rule, be expressed in a language comprehensible to everyone.
   -- Albert Einstein

The mathematical sciences particularly exhibit order, symmetry, and limitation; and these are the greatest forms of the beautiful.
   -- Aristotle

At UCSD, we provide courses of study that introduce students to the fundamentals of mathematics and allow them to master the most important parts of the subject both pure and applied. By offering seven different undergraduate degree programs and four graduate programs, and with a faculty encompassing a variety of fields, the department seeks to accommodate varied student interests in mathematics, encouraging an interdisciplinary focus that fosters program diversity.
