Accessing the Samba services from your Windows NT client
You should have received your samba password via email. You will probably want to sync your general Math-UNIX password (NIS+) with your samba password
by using the smbpasswd command. There are basically three methods you can use to gain access to your UNIX
home structure via your NT client.
NOTE: Be sure to restart the NT machine after you have completed your work. This is the only sure way to unmount your home structure.Start Menu - Shutdown
(be sure to click on Restart).
-
Select the Samba-server via Network Neighborhood
Double-click on the Network Neighborhood icon on the desktop. In the Netwok Neighborhood Window, double-click on the Entire Network entry. In the Entire Network Window, double-click on the Microsoft Windows Network entry. The Samba server icon will appear as Math-samba. Simply double-click on
Math-samba, and after a short delay, Euclid will appear. Double click on Euclid, and you
will be prompted for your username and password, be sure to use your samba password.
You will then see the contents of your home structure in the window.
-
Map a Network Drive
Two of the most popular methods of mapping a network drive are by "Right Clicking"
with your mouse on either the My Computer or Network Neighborhood icons. You can
then click on the Map a Network Drive option. This will bring up a dialog box which will
Allow you to select an available drive letter, and path. Enter the path to the desired service
previously configured on your Samba server in the form "\euclid\username".
A window will then appear, place your username in the Connect As: field and your samba password in the Password: field.
-
Issuing a NET USE console command
You can open a Console Command window and issue the command line equivalent of the Map a Network
Drive option by using the NET USE command. It has the following syntax: NET USE
drive letter: \euclid\username.
You will be prompted for the password.
Note: It is very important that you restart the machine after you are finished. These mounts will
remain available if you simply log-out. The mounts will be fully cleared if you restart the machine. Go
to the Start Menu, Shutdown (be certain to click on Restart).
