Department Network Printers: Microsoft Windows Printing
Printer Setup for Microsoft Windows XP Professional
- Go to "Start" menu
- "Printers and Faxes"
- Click on the "Add a printer" icon on the left sidebar titled "Printer Tasks" for the "Add Printer Wizard".
- At the "Welcome to the Add Printer Wizard", click "Next".
- Select the "Local printer attached to this computer" option.
- Check OFF the "Automatically detect and install my Plug and Play printer
- "Next" button.
- Select the "Create a new port:" option and change the "Type of port:" popup menu to "Standard TCP/IP Port".
- "Next" button. for the "Add Standard TCP/IP Printer Port Wizard"
- At the "Welcome to the Add Standard TCP/IP Printer Port Wizard" screen, click "Next" button".
- In thie "Add Port" screen, for the "Printer Name or IP Address:" field, type in "euclid.ucsd.edu". By default, the "Port Name:" field will also be automaticaly filled in with whatever printer name you type. For the "Port Name:" field, type in the queue name of the printer followed by "@euclid.ucsd.edu" (so it looks like an email address -- e.g. "p7132@euclid.ucsd.edu").
- "Next" button.
- In the "Additional Port Information Required" screen, change the "Device Type" setting from "Standard" to "Custom" and click on the "Settings..." button.
- In the "Configure Standard TCP/IP Port Monitor" window, change the "Protocol" setting from "Raw" to "LPR". In the "LPR Settings" section, for the "Queue Name:" field, type in the queue name of the printer (e.g. "p7132"). Check ON the "LPR Byte Counting Enabled" option. Don't change anything else. Click the "OK" button.
- "Next button.
- In the "Completing the Add Standard TCP/IP Printer Port Wizard" screen, click the "Finish" button.
- Now returned back to the "Install Printer Software" screen, in the "Manufacturer" list on the left, choose "HP". In the "Printers" list on the right, choose the matching or closest matching printer model driver for the printer you want to use. The "HP LaserJet 8000 Series PS" driver works well for most black and white laser printers and the "HP Color LaserJet 4550 PS" driver works well for most color laser printers. You can optionally use the "Have Disk..." option to select newer drivers from another source.
- "Next" button.
- In the "Name Your Printer" screen, change the "Printer name:" field to be the same as your printer's queue name (e.g. "p7132").
- For the "Do you want to use this printer as the default printer?", change it from "Yes" to "No".
- "Next" button.
- In the "Print Test Page" screen, for the "Do you want to print a test page?", change it from "Yes" to "No".
- In the "Completing the Add Printer Wizard" screen, click the "Finish" button.
- Right-click on the new printer entry (e.g. "p7132") and choose "Properties".
- In the "p7132 Properties" window, select the "Device Settings" tab.
- In the "Installation Options" section, change the "Duplex Unit:" option from "Not Installed" to "Installed". Change the "Total Printer Memory:" option from "16 - 19 MB" to "36 MB or more".
- Click the "OK" button.
