Enrollment Statistics

Students are weighted for the administration's load calculations as follows: Undergraduate enrollments are multiplied by course units and divided by 15, and graduate student enrollments are divided by 3 to arrive at the weighted student enrollment, in units of FTE (full time equivalent) students.

Enrollments 1994-95

The numbers below reflect the three quarter average enrollments in mathematics courses. Graduate students are computed at 3 courses per student, regardless of actual enrollment. The department had 78 graduate students and 167 upper division majors during 1994-95.

Comparisons with Other Institutions

The AMS Notices, August 1995, gives enrollment data for departments from Group I (in which UCSD falls) to Group VI. The following table shows how UCSD enrollments for Fall 1994 and Fall 1995 compare with other Group I departments. Percentages are of total undergraduate enrollments in mathematics courses. Remedial courses get no credit at UCSD, and are not taught by faculty. Enrollment in the non-credit remedial courses both last and this Fall was about 150, or about 3% of undergraduate enrollment. Note too that some subject areas are offered only in Winter and Spring, distorting the percentages below.
