Pansy Square

The following pansy square is adapted from "Field of Pansies", which appears in Granny Squares, Nanny Squares (ISBN 0-8487-0769-9). The original design calls for size 5 DMC pearl cotton thread in colors #307, #208, #550, #902, #355, and #319, worked with a size #7 steel hook. I've found the squares (but not so much the pansies) scale excellently up to yarn work. My version is done in Lion Brand Jiffy (yeah, yeah, I know, I'm a cheapass) with a size J/10 Susan Bates hook. A yarn version would work well with the pansy replaced by another motif with 5 clear points to join in.

Pansy

With yellow, ch 6, join with a sl st to form a ring.

Rnd 1: Ch 3 for first dc, 2 dc in ring, (ch 8, 3 dc in ring) 4 times, ch 8, sl st to top of beg ch -- 5 ch-8 lps around. Fasten off.

Rnd 2: Join next color in center st of any 3-dc group, sc in same st, * ch 2, (tr, ch 1) 11 times in next lp, tr in same lp, ch 2, sc in center st of next 3-dc group, rep from * once. ** Ch 2, (dc, ch 1) 10 times in next lp, dc in same lp, ch 2, sc in center st of next 3-dc group, rep from ** twice. Sl st to first sc. Fasten off.

Rnd 3: Join next color in any sp, sc in same space, * ch 3, sc in next sp, rep from * around, ch 3, sl st to first sc. Fasten off.

The recommended colors for the three rounds in order are yellow-deep purple-medium purple, yellow-rust-deep purple, yellow-rust-yellow, and yellow-rust-medium rust.

Square

Note: This design advises picots after clusters by ch 5, sl st in top of cluster. Other picots would probably work as well.

Rnd 2: Sl st in next ch-5 sp, ch 4 for first dc and ch 1, (dc, ch 1) in same lp 3 times, * (dc, ch 1) in next loop 4 times, rep from * around, sl st to 3rd ch of beg ch. (20 dc/ch-1 combos)

Rnd 3: Sc in next ch-1 sp, * ch 5, sc in next sp, rep from * around, sc 2, dc in starting sc for the last ch-5 loop. (20 ch-5 loops).

Rnd 4: Sc in first lp, * ch 5, sk next lp, 4tr in next lp, ch 3, 4 tr in next lp, ch 5, sk next lp, sc in next lp **, ch 5, sc in next sp, rep for * around ending at **, ch 2, dc in first sc.

Rnd 5: Sc in first lp, * ch 3, sc in next sp, ch 5, 4-tr cluster over 4 next tr, picot, ch 5, sl st in ch-3 sp, ch 5, 2-tr cluster over same ch-3 sp, picot, ch 5, sl st in same ch-3 sp, ch 5, 4-tr cluster over 4 next tr, picot, ch 5, sc in next sp *, rep from * around.

Rnd 6: Sl st in next ch-3 sp, ch 5 for first dtr, 4 dtr in same sp, * ch 5, sc in next picot, ch 5, (2-dc cluster, ch 5, 2-dc cluster) in next picot, ch 5, sc in next picot, ch 5, ** sk next sc, 5 dtr in next sp, rep from * around ending last rep at **, sl st to top of beg ch.

Rnd 7: Ch 3 for first dc, dc in each of next 4 dtr, * 3 dc in next sp, ch 5, dc in next sp, ch 5, (3 dc, ch 5, 3 dc) in corner ch-5 sp, ch 5, dc in next sp, ch 5, 3 dc in next sp **, dc in each of next 5 dtr, rep from * around, ening last rep at **, sl st to top of beg ch.

Rnd 8: Ch 3 for first dc, dc in each of next 5 dc, * * ch 5, dc in next sp, ch 5, 3dc in next sp, dc in each of next 3 dc, (3dc, ch 5, 3 dc) in next corner, dc in each of next 3 dc, 3dc in next sp, ch 5, dc in next sp, ch 5, sk 2 dc **, dc in each of hext 7 dc, rep from * around, ending last rep at **, dc in next dc, sl st to top of beg ch.

Rnd 9: Sl st in next dc, ch 2 for beg 3-dc cluster, 2-dc cluster over next 2 dc, * (ch 5, dc in next sp) twice, ch 5, sk 3 dc, dc in next 6 dc, (3dc, ch 5, 3 dc) in corner, dc in each of next 6 dc, (ch 5, dc in next sp) twice, ch 5 **, sk 2 dc, 3-dc cluster over next 3 dc, rep from *.

Joining on round 9: To make an edge join up with an edge of a square already done, place wrong sides together and, starting with the corner on that edge, replace the ch 5 with (ch 2, sc in corner of 2nd square, ch 2), and repeat, replacing each ch 5 with (ch 2, sc in next sp of 2nd square, ch 2) until reaching the corner.
