Math 21D General Information

Course Description

This course is introductory one on Ordinary Differential Equation (ODE) for students majoring in mathematics, engineering and the sciences. The focus is the very basic concepts of ODE, its geometric meaning, as well as its applications in modelling. It is good habit to do a review by yourself after the lecture finishes each portion.

There will be midterms and a final exam.

Exams

There will be two midterms and a final exam.

  • All exams are close-book, close-notes. No calculator is allowed.

  • Final Exam: Tuesday, March 18th, 3:00-6:00 pm, at Peterson Hall 108.
  • Midterms: Will be hold during the lecture. Check the schedule for the dates.
  • Student ID is required to take the exams. Students without ID will not be allowed to take the exams.
  • Sample exams: (Note that even though in the sample exams calculator might be allowed, NO calculator will be allowed in our exams).
  • Midterm 1: Sample1, Sample2 Solutions: S1, S2 Solution to the first Midterm: Version 1 , Version 2 , Version 3
    Midterm 2: Sample1, Sample2 Solutions: S1, S2 Solution to the second Midterm: Version 1 , Version 2 , Version 3

  • No (absolutely) make-up exams. No calculators during the exams.

  • Homework

    There will be weekly homework assignments. Homework should be turned (are due) in at the end of each Thursday's discussion section. Written homework #n is due in discussion Thurs day of week #n, for n=1, ..., 10.

  • Late homework will not be accepted.
  • It is very important that you do all the homework, since it is almost impossible to learn the subject matter without doing many problems.
  • We encourage you to work together on the exercises. Any assignment, though, should represent your own work. Check Academic Integrity Guidelines for more informations.

  • Schedule

    Grades

    Grades will be based on the following percentages.
    Homework 10%
    Lab 5%
    Midterm 1 20%
    Midterm 2 20%
    Final 45%


    Office Hours

    You are encouraged to attend the office hours provided by the instructor and teaching assistants. There are also Calculus Tutoring Lab at the APM room 2402, as well as other Tutoring services available.
