Joke
|
Comments: |
A mathematician, an engineer, and a physicist were taking a math class together. One day the mathematician and the physicist decided to play a joke on the engineer. They told him that the pretty girl sitting at the back of the room said he could get close to her every time they ringed the bell, but he could only travel half the distance from him to her. So they started ringing the bell and the engineer would travel half the distance, and the mathematician and the physicist were making fun of him. They thought it was really funny. When the engineer was 1/16 the original distance they asked him, “why are you doing this? You do know you are never going to get there right?” And the engineer replied, “I will get close enough for practical purposes.”

About a year ago I was looking at a problem on a Mathcamp application that has been troubling me. The problem was to show that one given sequence was always larger than the other for the same values of n, namely a(n-1)>Pi/2^(n+2) where a(n-1)=((a(n)^2+1)^.5-1)\a(n) and a(0)=1. NOTE: For this problem the notation a(n-1) is the same as a SUB n-1 NOT a OF n-1 I just had no better way of expressing it with my keyboard.

An anthropologist, a physicist, and a mathematician were asked to participate in a study of survival skills. Each participant was to be held for a twenty-four period, without human contact, each recieved only one can of food. At the end of the anthropologist's term, the program director asked how he had done. "Not too bad," he replied. "I was able to find a small rock, and a boulder which I used to sharpen it. It did take some time to construct a tool, but I was able to open the can and eat." Then the program director questioned the physicist, who had survived the period comfortably. "I sat for a while, and was able to determine the speed and trajectory at which I would have to throw such an object in order for it to burst. Then I performed the experiment with positive results." The director, having two successful accounts, was surprised to see the mahtematician tired and irritated upon release. When he was questioned as to why, the man replied, "I am tired and I am hungry. I've had nothing to eat for twenty-four hours." The program director then inquired whether or not hte man had found his can of food. "Of course I did," the mathematician explained, "I've just spent the entire evening repeating 'let c be an open can.'"

an old problem
|
Comments: |
This problem has been up on this board for about a year, and Prof Evans presented it to us one day in 140. Here is what I believe to be a solution: For the sequence a(0)=1, a(n+1)=((a(n)^2+1)^(.5)-1)/a(n), show that a(n+1)> Pi/2^n+2. This is what I think is the correct formulation of the problem. Our first step to notice is that a(n)>0 for all n, this shows that a(n)^2+2a(n)+1>a(n)^2+1. From this we easily get that a(n+1)=<1 for all n. Thus, we proceed the proof by induction. a(0+1)=Sqrt[2]-1>Pi/2^2 through simple numerical manipulations. So, suppose a(k+1)>Pi/2^k+2. Then a(k+2) which is ((a(k+1)^2+1)^.5-1/a(k+1), since a(k+1)<1, we thus get that a(k+2)> (a(k+1)^2+1). Furthermore, a(k+1)^2 and 1 are both greater than (Pi/2^k+2)^2, and so a(k+2)> (2*(pi/2^k+2)^2)^.5 which is 2^.5*pi/2^k+2, which is certainly bigger than pi/2^k+3. And thus, a(k+1+1)>pi/2^k+1+2, and so by induction our problem is solved.

My previous proof was flawed! However, I just found another proof, so I will leave you guys with a couple of exercises: 1. Find where my previous proof went wrong. 2. Work out the exercise using the following outline: a) Show that a(2)>(2^6*pi)/(2^10-pi^2). b) Show by induction that a(n+1)>pi*2^n+4/2^2n+6. c) Using part b), show by induction that a(n+1)>Pi/2^n+2 Now I think that does it.

The Unsolvable Problem
|
Comments: |
I am taking 20E. We had a homework problem where we were supposed to find a function, if possible, that had a curl of xi. According to one of our vector identities, this is not possible. I started with the formula for curl, set each of the components of the equation equal to the corresponding component of the target vector, xi, and then double integrated over the appropriate variables. Since the problem asked for any function, I set all of the constants I got by integrating over an indefinite integral equal to zero. I then solved the three equations and I got a solution, albeit a nasty one. Unfortunately, I took a year and a half break from calculus and find myself unable to check my solution into the equation to find the curl. But at least when I plug my solution into the secondary equations derived from the integrating, the solution seems to hold true. I was wondering if a) anyone who had some extra time on their hands might check my solution in the original curl equation, b) explain to me in geometric terms why it is impossible to have a function with a curl xi and/or c) tell me what was wrong with my methodology that led me to think that I had solved an allegedly unsolvable problem. My TA ran through the solution briefly and couldn't prove me wrong, and I got the brush off from the prof. The curl of a function F = <F1,F2,F3> is <dF3/dy-dF2/dz, dF1/dz-dF3/dx, dF2/dx-dF1/dy>. The solution I got was F = <x^2*y^2*z/(x*z^2-y^3), x*y^3*z/(x*z^2-y^3), x^2*y*z^2/(x*z^2-y^3)>. Please e-mail me with any ideas you have. Thanks.

the base case of n=1 is simple. lets consider it to hold for n=m. then for n-m+1, we add a new element x to the previous m element set. Now x can either be added or not added to each of the 2^m subsets (by induction assumption) to give all possible subsets of m+1 element set. This gives rise to 2*2^m subsets i.e. 2^(m+1) subsets

We have found your name into Internet luckily accidentally, but on another side, it happened naturally, because we are searching partners for to embody results of our mathematic achievements. In our site we have briefly stated an essence and a subject of our researches and also a scope of our achievements. In our site we have tried to show, that the problem of construction of algebraic error correcting codes over arbitrary alphabets is old, that achievements in this area were very modest and that difficulties in the decision of a problem - serious, but we have solve this problem. The area of our researches and the results received by us concern to construction of algebraic error correcting codes conformed with a signal and matched with a metric of channel. It is possible due to using analog signals with multilevel modulation and nonbinary error correcting codes in Lee metric which are in conformity with the signal. We see our cooperation in such way, you know a problem as a whole, will familiarize with our results, will state them a due estimation and will involve investors and developers and manufacturers of means of the communications for manufacture of new production with high competitive parameters in the market. Profit we shall divide or we shall leave in inside common company. Best regards Andrey Visit our site www.mnpq.com

I'm trying to prove the following: if p is any odd prime greater than 3 and if 1/1 + 1/2 + 1/3 + ... + 1/(p-1) is added to give the rational fraction a/b, then p^2 | a. I tried putting the problem in Z_p field and so the problem is equivalent to proving that the sum 1^(-1) + 2^(-1) + ... + (p-1)^(-1) is the zero element of the field (noting that the term 1/j in the above sum is j^(-1) or x where x is the least positive integer such that xj = -1 (mod p), employing wilson's theorem). But the inverses of 1, 2, 3, ..., p-1 are just the same elements again in some order, so the sum is equivalent to 1 + 2 + ... + (p-1) = p(p-1)/2, but this only proves that p divides into p(p-1)/2 and no p^2 | p(p-1)/2. Any ideas?

justin, the problem is equivalent to proving that the coefficient of x in polynomial f(x) = (x-1)(x-2)(x-3)...(x-(p-1)) is divisible by p^2. To resolve, note that f(x) = x^(p-1) - 1 (mod p) identically since f(x) - x^(p-1) + 1 is a polynomial of degree less than p-1 and thus all of its coefficients must be divisible by p. now if k is the coefficient of x in an expansion of f(x), then setting x = p, you get (p-1)! = kp + (p-1)! (mod p^3) reducing to modulo p^3 (all other terms are zero elements if p > 3). Therefore k = 0(mod p^2) and we're finished.

A company is distributing a new cd. The demand for the CD in x hundred units per week in terms of wholesale price P in dollars is given as p= D(x)= sqrt(400-6x). The supply function for the CD is S(x)= sqrt(40+2x). Determine the consumer's surplus if the wholesale price is set at $16. Determine the producers' surplus if the wholesale price is set at $10. What is the point of equilibrium? Determine the consumers'surplus and the producers' surplus at this point. Is equilibrium the break even point? Do I solve $16 = P first then plug x into S(x)? I really need help on this one... thanks ------------------------------------------------------- A company's marginal profit at a production level of x units per day is given by MP(x)= 20 - 1/5x. If x= 20, the company breaks even. What is the company's profit function? What is the companies maximum profit? To get the profit function do I get the antiderivative of MP? How does the break even point help me to figure the maximum profit? any help will be appreciated...

the monkey and iron ball conundrum
|
Comments: |
Recently, in the Union-Tribune, the Quest science section ran a small brain teaser about a monkey and an iron ball. Essentially, it posed this scenario and question: A monkey is dangling from a rope on a pulley. At the other end of the rope is an iron ball of equal weight. If the monkey climbs the rope, what will happen to the iron ball? Will it go up, down or remain in the same place? The answer, derived from a book of puzzles, said that since the monkey and ball are of equal weight, the ball would rise as the monkey did. Some readers disagree, arguing that as the rope was pulled through the pulley by the monkey, the ball would rise faster than the monkey. My question of math club members: Are they right? Is this a question of hypothetical versus real? In other words, is the printed answer correct hypothetically, but incorrect in a real world where friction and other factors play a part? Please advise.

Math Course Advice

Comments: |
Hey, I heard about you guys in SOLO's Get Involved booklet sent out to me a few weeks ago. Anyways I make my way to your website and find some cool stuff. I also fell under the impression that I can get some advice about Math courses and stuff. I'm a BioE major going to minor in mathematics. To complete a minor I need at least 4 upper math classes. My major is pretty demanding so I don't have much room to include all these courses in my studies. I'm in a bit of a dilemma however. I love math, and I want to take some cool courses, like Intro to Topology, probably some Real Analysis stuff, and that Elementary Math Logic course looks real intriguing. I've been told that before I get into any upper math I need to take math 109. I look it up and I find that most of that stuff I've learned before. Let me post the catalog description: 109.Mathematical Reasoning (4) This course uses a variety of topics in mathematics to introduce the students to rigorous mathematical proof, emphasizing quantifiers, induction, negation, proof by contradiction, naive set theory, equivalence relations and epsilon-delta proofs. Required of all departmental majors. Prerequisite: Math. 20F. What I'm hoping to find out from one of you is what sorta material goes on in this class specifically. Like take those proof techniques, the direct and indirect ones, what sorta statements are asked to be proved in this class? Or the epsilon delta proofs, how many of the limit definitions are used, like for example limits at infinity, or infinite limits, left sided limits, limits of a function of several variables, etc. When I learned epsilon delta proofs we did it for like simple linear, some polynomial, some radial, and maybe some simple rational functions. I know some functions carrying out an epsilon delta proof can be very involved. I suppose I've written enough, if someone could get in contact with me who's taken this course I'd be very happy. I think I'll check out some math club stuff this next coming quarter Jaime Let me post the catalog description: 109.Mathematical Reasoning (4) This course uses a variety of topics in mathematics to introduce the students to rigorous mathematical proof, emphasizing quantifiers, induction, negation, proof by contradiction, naive set theory, equivalence relations and epsilon-delta proofs. i need some help on a (sort of) math puzzle i have come in contact with recently. its is a competitive game, with 15 nails or pegs. the 15 nails are put on a board, arranged in rows of 3 5 and 7. on a persons turn, they may pick as many nails (or beans, or whatever) from any given row, they can only take from that row, no other row on that turn. the 2 people take turns picking as many or few as they want from one row per turn, until only one is left. they person who takes that last one wins. below, an x indicating a peg and 0 meaning pegs that have been taken, a game might begin with the first move resulting in the second, the second move resulting in #3, and so on 1)XXX 2)00X 3)00X 4)00X 5)000 XXXXX 2)XXXXX 3)0XXXX 4)0XXX0 5)0XXX0 XXXXXXX 2)XXXXXXX 3)XXXXXXX 4)XXXXXXX 5)XXXXXXX 6)000 7)000 8)000 6)0XXX0 7)00000 8)00000 6)000000X 7)000000X 8)0000000 in this case, the person who made move 8 lost if u know or figure out a sure-fire strategy, ie. take the same as the other person, or take an amount to total 3, or an even number or what ever, please email the solution to fitzy2006@msn.com or, if u just have some advice, feel free to send a mail tyvm for your help

A Useful Math Site
|
Comments: |
Hello. I came across a math site that I find very practical: http://www.akiti.ca/ Thought students at UC San Diego might also find it handy (math, chemistry, physics, and engineering undergrads would probably find this site handy. Grads might find it worthwhile to bookmark this site as well, for the odd time a simple utility is needed.
