Course Description

This course will be about using convex techniques to solve nonconvex problems, to the cutting-edge research advances and applications. To be precisely, it will cover recently developed new techniques in polynomial optimization, control theory, convex geometry, moment and tensor computations, sparse/low rank optimization. The background on linear conic optimization, like semidefinite programming, is preferable for the class.

Prerequisite

Consent by Instructor.

Textbook

The recommended textbook is Semidefinite Optimization and Convex Algebraic Geometry, edited by Blekherman, Parrilo and Thomas. A free version for the book can be obtained here.

Homework Assignments

Homework will be assigned and collected in class.

  • Homework Assignment #3, due on 6/05/2017
  • Please write your names, ID nubmers, and section numbers on your homework, and staple together your homework pages.

    Exams

    There will be no written exams in this class.

    Grading

    The final course grade will be based on the performance of completing homework assignments.
