    Restaurants

There are many restaurants in the Old Town area within easy walk of the conference hotel, and many more in downtown San Diego a brief trolley ride from the Old Town Transportation Center.  We mention a few that we can recommend below. 

OLD TOWN

BERTA'S  3928 Twiggs Street, 295-2343.  South American fare served in a casual, cheerful setting.  Wide-ranging menu includes ample vegetarian choices.  Open daily (except Monday), lunch and dinner.  Moderate.

CAFE COYOTE  2461 San Diego Avenue, 291-4695.  Light Mexican fare with Southwest influences.  Open daily, breakfast, lunch and dinner.  Low to moderate.

CAFE PACIFICA  2414 San Diego Avenue, 291-6666.  One of the best seafood restaurants in San Diego.  Generous portions and hospitable service. Reservations recommended.  Dinner nightly.  Moderate to expensive. 

CASA DE BANDINI  2660 Calhoun Street, 297-8211.  Very popular Mexican restaurant in stylish, hacienda setting.  Mariachis, too.  Lunch and dinner, daily.  Moderate.

CASA GUADALAJARA  4105 Taylor Street, 295-5111.  Popular Mexican restaurant with traditional fare and large outdoor seating.  Lunch and dinner, daily.  Low to moderate. 

EL AGAVE 2304 San Diego Avenue, 220-0692.  Upscale gourmet Mexican restaurant (aka, no chips and salsa here).  Beautiful dining room plus terrace dining.  Receives high marks for preparation and presentation. Open daily, lunch and dinner.  Moderate to expensive. 

GREAT WALL  2543 Congress Street, 291-9478.  Specialties include Peking duck carved tableside, aromatic shrimp and Szechuan dumplings. Comfortable, cozy dining room with fireplace and spacious patio.  Open daily, lunch and dinner.  Moderate.

JACK & GUILIO's ITALIAN RESTAURANT  2391 San Diego Avenue, 294-2074. Operated by the former owners of Giulio's in Pacific Beach, who have maintained high quality while offering a casual family-style atmosphere and moderate prices.  Open daily, lunch and dinner. 

LINO'S ITALIAN RESTAURANT  2754 Calhoun Street, 299-7124. Popular with tourists and locals alike.  Located in the colorful Bazaar del Mundo shopping plaza.  Open daily, lunch and dinner.  Moderate.

OLD TOWN MEXICAN CAFE  2489 San Diego Avenue, 297-4330.  Down-to-earth eatery serving up high-quality traditional Mexican fare.  Extremely popular with locals and a favorite of President Clinton.  Expect to wait if arriving after 6 pm.  Open daily, breakfast, lunch and dinner.  Inexpensive.

GAS LAMP DISTRICT & DOWNTOWN

ATHENS MARKET  109 West F Street, 234-1955.  Lively, stylish downtown eatery serving up traditional Greek fare.  Dinner nightly.  Moderate. 

BAYOU BAR & GRILL  329 Market Street, 696-8747. Excellent Cajun-style eatery with extensive menu.  Offers a popular fixed-price 4 course meal each Monday night for $14.  Lunch and dinner, daily.  Moderate. 

BELLA LUNA  748 Fifth Avenue, 239-3222.  Regional Italian cooking. Specialties include risotto dishes and crepes stuffed with salmon. Dinner only, daily.  Moderate to expensive. 

BLUE POINT COASTAL CUISINE  565 Fifth Avenue, 233-6623.  Delicious seafood in a classy atmosphere.  Dinner only.  Expensive. 

CROCE'S RESTAURANT AND JAZZ BAR  802 Fifth Avenue, 233-4355.  Open to the street with nightly jazz in the adjoining room.  Pastas, salads and entrees from a varied menu. Dinner only, daily.  Moderate to expensive.

DOBSON'S  956 Broadway Circle, 231-6771.  Steak and seafood restaurant with elegant dining room and gorgeous mahogany bar.  Big city atmosphere. Lunch Monday-Friday;  Dinner nightly, except Sunday.  Expensive.

FIO'S  801 Fifth Avenue, 234-3467.  Fresh fish, seafood and pastas with a Mediterranean flair in a stylish setting.  Popular.  Dinner only, nightly. Moderate to expensive. 

GREEK ISLANDS CAFE, Seaport Village, 239-5216.  Great, tasty Greek food. Self-serve eatery with splendid harbor view.  Inexpensive. 

HARBOR HOUSE RESTAURANT, Seaport Village, 232-1141.  Fine seafood with striking harbor view.  Lunch and dinner, daily.  Moderate to expensive.

KARL STRAUSS' OLD COLUMBIA BREWERY & GRILL  1157 Columbia Street,  234-2739. Burgers, pasta, fish and chips, grilled sausage plates.  Ales and beers brewed on premises.  Noisy on weekends.  Lunch and dinner daily.  Low to moderate. 

LA PROVENCE  708 Fourth Avenue, 544-0661.  Southern French and Mediterranean fare in a pleasant setting. Lunch, Mo-Fr, Dinner, daily. Moderate to expensive. 

REI DO GADO  939 Fourth Avenue, 702-8464.  New Brazilian restaurant featuring tasty pork, chicken and beef grilled specialities.  Moderate. 

ROYAL THAI CUISINE  467 Fifth Avenue, 230-8424.  Thai and veggie specialities in a pleasing atmosphere.  Lunch and dinner, daily.  Low to moderate. 

SAMMY'S CALIFORNIA WOODFIRED PIZZA  770 Fourth Avenue , 230-8888.  Specializes in trendy pizzas, pastas and salads.  Friendly, efficient service. Lunch and dinner daily.  Low to moderate. 

SEVILLA  555 Fourth Avenue, 233-5979.  Traditional Spanish cuisine and atmosphere.  The paella is excellent, and the tapas menu extensive. Dinner, nightly.  Moderate to expensive. 

STAR OF INDIA  423 F Street, 544-9891.  Very popular Indian restaurant with extensive menu, good service.  Lunch and dinner, daily.  Moderate.

TAKA  555 Fifth Avenue, 338-0555.  Asian food and sushi at affordable prices in beautiful setting. May order half portions.  Dinner, nightly. Low to expensive.
