CONFERENCE CHECK-IN Stan Gurak will be manning a check-in/reception table Saturday afternoon from 3 - 6 pm in the lobby of the Holiday Inn Hotel & Suites for your convenience upon arrival. Please check in at the table to pick up conference materials, your badge, banquet ticket(s) and schedule of talks for Sunday morning. Participants staying at the Western Inn, nextdoor, should drop by the Holiday Inn during these hours for conference check-in. If you are arriving late, you will be able to check in at the banquet or during the academic sessions. DIRECTIONS/PARKING: If you arrive by car, here are directions to the conference hotels in Old Town. From I-5 south, take the Old Town exit making a left at the stop sign at the end of the ramp. At the first light (Moore Street) turn left, then right onto Arista. The Holiday Inn is on your left; the Western Inn is on your right. To reach the USD campus from the conference hotels (about 2 km), take Jefferson north turning right onto Conde St and left onto Congress St. (which becomes San Diego Avenue as you pass the Old Town Transit Center), then right onto Taylor St. and left again on Morena Blvd*. After crossing the bridge veer right onto Linda Vista Road. At the second light make a left to enter the USD campus and proceed up the hill. Just retrace your route to return to your hotel in Old Town. To reach the USD campus from the major freeways we suggest: Approaching from the south: Take I-5 north to the I-8 east connector, exiting off Morena Blvd before merging onto I-8. After crossing the bridge veer right onto Linda Vista Road. At the second light make a left to enter the USD campus and proceed up the hill. Approaching from the east: Take I-8 west, exiting at Morena Blvd. After crossing the bridge veer right onto Linda Vista Road. At the second light make a left to enter the USD campus and proceed up the hill. Approaching from the north: Take I-5 south, exiting at Tecolote Drive/Sea World Drive. At end of ramp make a right, then a right at the next light onto W. Morena Blvd.. Then make a left onto Napa St.,and then the next left onto Linda Vista Road. At the next light, make a left to enter the USD campus and proceed up the hill. Permits to park on the USD campus are required WEEKDAYS ONLY, but are available at no charge at the kiosk at the campus entrance. You may ask the attendant for directions to the University Center (banquet site) or the the Manchester Conference Center (location of academic sessions). (A map can be found at http://www.acusd.edu/about/maps.shtml) On WEEKENDS one may park in any WHITE-lined parking space without a permit. YELLOW- lined parking spaces always require a special permit. (*An alternative to reach the USD campus from the conference hotels is to take Moore Street north onto the I-5/I-8 freeway connector, taking the eastbound I-8 ramp, exiting at Morena Blvd and proceeding as above. To return to your hotel take the I-5 southbound connector from Morena Blvd, exiting at Old Town. Make a left at the stop sign at the end of the ramp. At the first light (Moore Street) turn left, then right onto Arista. In either direction you NEVER merge onto the freeways, just stay in the connector and exit/entrance ramps!) BANQUET & TALKS The conference banquet will be held the first evening (Saturday, December 16) at the Hahn University Center on the USD campus from 7:00 to 9:30 pm. Please note this is later than the original starting time of 6:30 pm. At the conclusion of the banquet, you will be asked to provide us the title of any talk you wish to contribute for the academic sessions, along with any time and date preferences you may have. Talks should be brief, 10-12 minutes or so. We highly recommend that presenters prepare transparencies, as blackboard space is quite limited! ACADEMIC SESSIONS The academic sessions will begin Sunday morning, December 17, and conclude at noon Wednesday, December 20. Monday afternoon will be free for local sightseeing. On Tuesday evening, the USD mathematics department will host an informal party for the conference participants. Here is the updated schedule for the sessions. There is much to see and do in the San Diego area, whether you go leisurely at your own pace and manner or in a more organized way. For those who preferred to visit the San Diego Zoo (the overwhelming choice), we will try to arrange transportation by carpooling since going by public transit is not direct. Both Sea World and taking a harbor or whale-watching cruise are easy to do using public transport (just a short bus or a trolley ride from Old Town). COMPUTER ACCESS From Sunday, December 17 through Wednesday, December 20 conference attendees will be able to access the internet or telnet to their home account at any of the various computer labs on the USD campus. No login is required, but you may be asked for identification. We have arranged to get computer access cards for each of the conference attendees. These will be available at conference check-in. Computer labs will generally be open from 8 or 9 am until 10 pm during the days of the conference. Labs are located in Serra Hall 205, 185 and 172 and also in Olin Hall 122.
