Undergraduate Student Enrollment

Student Types

UCSD Students enroll using the online registration system called WebReg. Students are able to plan courses, add courses, and waitlist courses using this system up until the end of the 2nd week of the quarter. If an instructor plans to have homework or other assignments due during the first two weeks of the course, they may want to make provisions in their syllabus for students who add after an assignment is due.

WebReg enforces prerequisites as listed in the General Catalog course descriptions. Any student who does not have the prerequisite for a course cannot enroll using WebReg unless they are given authorization by the instructor to waive the prerequisite.

If a course is full, students may add themselves to the waitlist. If another student drops from the course, the waitlist automatically enrolls the next student.

Students may enroll using an in-progress course. For example, students who are enrolled in Math 20A during Fall Quarter may enroll in Math 20B for Winter Quarter before their final grade has posted. The Registrar's Office runs a prerequisite check at the beginning of each quarter to ensure that students who do not pass their prerequisite course are dropped from the next course. Exceptions to this are students whose grades are pending due to a grade of Incomplete or pending a review board for charges of Academic Dishonesty.

Concurrent Enrollment students are not matriculated UCSD students; they have not gone through the UCSD Admissions process. Instead, they are looking to enroll in UCSD courses through UCSD Extended Studies.

NEW: Starting in FA23, Concurrent Enrollment students will use EASy to request enrollment. Students can only enroll in a course if the instructor and the department approve, and if there are seats available in the course. When an EASy request is submitted, it will be routed to the instructor for review.

Prerequisites are not enforced for these students by UCSD Extended Studies. Instead, it is up to the instructor to determine if the student is adequately prepared for the course. If an instructor approves the student to enroll, they are endorsing the student's preparation for their course.

Concurrent Enrollment students are exempt from the waitlist system in WebReg, since they do not enroll using WebReg. If an instructor approves enrollment via EASy, the Instructional Support Staff will only process the enrollment if/when a seat is available in the course. An instructor can approve over-enrollment if the course is full by sending explicit consent to the Instructional Support Staff (math-instr-support-g@ucsd.edu), should they so choose.

Students enrolled in California State Universities and California Community Colleges are eligible to take courses at UCSD through the Cross-Enrollment Program.

These students enroll using a Cross-Enrollment application form. They do not enroll online. Students can only enroll if the instructor, the department, and the UCSD Registrar's Office approve the application form.

Prerequisites are not enforced for these students by the UCSD Registrar's Office. Instead, it is up to the instructor to determine if the student is adequately prepared for the course. If an instructor signs the student's application form (or approves via email), they are endorsing the student's preparation for their course.

Approved Cross-Enrollment Students are enrolled in the course by the UCSD Registrar's Office only if space is available in the course.

EAP Reciprocal Exchange Students are international students who are visiting UCSD for one to three quarters as part of a Study Abroad Program through their home university.

These students enroll using WebReg. Their prerequisites are evaluated by the UCSD Math Advising Staff and their prerequisites are cleared as necessary within the WebReg system.

If a course is full, EAP Reciprocal Exchange Students may add themselves to the waitlist.

Enrollment Exceptions

Undergraduate students may contact the instructor of the course asking to waive a prerequisite. The department's policy is to give the instructor the ability to waive any prerequisite for their course should they so choose. We recommend that this option be used sparingly and only for students with exceptional circumstances.

Students use the Enrollment Authorization System (EASy) to request to waive a prerequisite for any course. Those requests are routed to the instructor for approval or disapproval.

If any instructor wants to convey blanket approval or disapproval to the Instructional Support staff for prerequisite enforcement, staff can process those requests without routing them individually.

The university's policy is that departments may over-enroll a lecture hall 10% over the room capacity if they wish to. The department's policy is that we will not over-enroll a lecture without the direct request of the instructor.

Students may approach an instructor with a request to override the waitlist and enroll directly in a course. Ultimately the decision is up to the instructor.

If any instructor wants to maintain a firm 'no' for over-enrollment, they can notify the Instructional Support Staff and we will let any inquiring students know.

Students can also use the Enrollment Authorizations System (EASy) to request to override the waitlist and enroll in a full course. Those requests are routed to the instructor for approval or disapproval.

The regular add period for undergraduate students ends after the 2nd week of the quarter. Students may still add during Weeks 3-10 with the consent of the instructor. The department defers entirely to the instructor on whether they will allow late-adds or not.

This approval can be granted by the instructor either by emailing the Instructional Support staff their consent or by giving approval through the Enrollment Authorization System (EASy).

Undergraduate students may enroll in graduate level courses with the consent of the instructor. We recommend that this consent only be given to exceptional undergraduate students who have shown mastery of their undergraduate coursework.

Undergraduate students requesting to enroll in graduate level courses must use the Enrollment Authorization System (EASy).

These requests may be placed on hold until Math PhD students have first had an opportunity to enroll in their core graduate coursework.

Enrollment Authorization System (EASy)

The UCSD Registrar’s Office has implemented online enrollment features in the Enrollment Authorization System (EASy) for students to use instead of Add/Change/Drop cards.

Some common reasons for students to use EASy are:

  1. Requesting to waive a course prerequisite.
  2. Undergraduate requesting to add a graduate course.
  3. Requesting to late-add a course.
  4. Requesting to add into a full course.*
  5. Graduate grade option change for a course.
  6. Graduate unit change for a course.

*We still prefer to hear from instructors directly about adding students from the waitlist and over-enrolling their courses, but it is possible for a student to make the request through EASy.

Students' requests are routed to the instructor via email request, who can then log into the system and either approve or deny. The request is then sent back to our office for WebReg processing.

If there are any blanket approvals or disapprovals an instructor would like to implement for any particular course, they can notify the Instructional Support staff and those requests will no longer be routed to the instructor for review.

Here is the link to EASy: http://easy.ucsd.edu/

Faculty will sign-in using the "Business Systems" log-in page. The page will often default to the "Student SSO" page which will not recognize faculty credentials; a drop-down field will allow the user to select the Business Systems log-in.

Special Studies Enrollment

Undergraduate students may request to enroll in a Special Studies course under the supervision of a faculty advisor.

Undergraduate students are encouraged to initiate contact with faculty in their interested area of research to see if they would be willing to act as an advisor for their reading or research project. If approved, these students will then make a Special Studies request in the Enrollment Authorization System (EASy) for their faculty advisor to review and approve.

Math 197 is intended for students who have received a paid or unpaid internship offer off-campus that is related to Mathematics and would like to earn academic credit for their internship. Students are required to do additional work to earn these units, as assigned by their faculty advisor.

Math 199 is intended for students who are looking to do an undergraduate reading or research project with a faculty member in a particular area of study and would like to earn academic credit for this work.

International students may be enrolling in a Math 197 or a Math 199 as part of their Curricular Practical Training (CPT) program. This is a type of employment authorization for F-1 students.

A third Special Studies course offered by the department, Math 199H, is reserved for students who are in the Math Honors Program. These students will use their research from Math 199H to write an undergraduate thesis. Information about the Honors Program can be found here: Math Honors Program

Enrollment Exceptions

Graduate students may request the following enrollment exceptions:

  1. Waiving a prerequisite.
  2. Enrolling in a full course by overriding the waitlist.
  3. Late-add after the 2nd week deadline.

These requests are made to the instructor of the course through the Enrollment Authorization System (EASy).

Graduate Student Late Action Requests

Graduate students may late-add a course between Weeks 3-10 with the approval from the instructor. Graduate students can request a late-add either through email or through the Enrollment Authorization System (EASy).

Graduate students may request a late-drop during Weeks 3-9. These requests require the approval from the student's major program advisor and Graduate Division. Instructor approval is not required. Graduate students can request a late-drop through the Enrollment Authorization System (EASy).

Graduate students may request a change in the number of units (for courses with variable units) during Weeks 3-10. These requests require the approval of the instructor, the department, and Graduate Division. Graduate students can request can request a change in units through the Enrollment Authorization System (EASy).

Graduate students may request a change in their grading option (Letter Grade or S/U) during Weeks 3-4. These requests require the approval of the instructor, the department, and Graduate Division. Graduate students can request can request a change in grading option through the Enrollment Authorization System (EASy). After Week 4 this request must be submitted by General Petition.
