Vector Calculus by S. Colley.
Required and available at the bookstore and on reserve at the math
library. We will cover chapters 5, 6 and 7. |

Course Content | Line and
surface integrals, iterated integrals, the theorems of Green, Gauss and
Stokes. |
Prerequisites | Math 51 or its equivalent A brief list of
topics you should be comfortable with (but will be briefly reviewed
throughout the course as necessary): single variable integration
techniques (specifically: fundamental theorem of calculus, integration by
parts, substitutions), vector operations, matrices and basic linear
algebra (more specifically: dot product, cross product, determinants,
inverses), partial derivatives. |

Midterm I location: Thursday 7-9PM, 200-020. Tuesday's lecture will be
required for the midterm. Wednesday's lecture will concern finding
potentials and will not be necessary for the midterm, but it will be used
in the next homework. Thursday's lecture will be midterm review.
Midterm I average 60.8 out of 80.
Midterm I solutions: I distributed those after the exam. Get in touch
with me if you didnt get a copy.
Midterm II average: 55.4 out of 80, standard deviation is 10.3.
Office hours for the final: Friday 12:15-2:15, Monday 12:15-2:15.
Review for the final: Friday 2:15-3:15.
Final Exam: Monday Dec 10, Building 370.

If you are having trouble with the homework or have questions about the
material, the best way to get help is to attend the office hours offered
by me and the two teaching assistants. If you can't make the scheduled
times, then email us and we'll set up an appointment.

- The Stanford University
Mathematics Organization (SUMO) provides free walk-in tutoring for
math students in the 51, 52, and 53 classes. Tutoring is held Monday and
Wednesday, 6-10 pm, in room 381T of the math building (that's Building
380). Tutoring begins on Monday, October 8.
- The Center for teaching and
learning offers free drop-in tutoring and
one-on-one appointments for students in the 50's sequence. Follow this link for times and locations.
Problem Sets are tentatively due on Thursdays at 5pm in my
mailbox. No late copies will be accepted, but the lowest score will be
dropped.
Completing homework assignments is an integral part of this course.
When you have worked on a problem for a while and remain stuck, you are
encouraged to ask for hints from me or from the CAs. Students may also
discuss problems with one another, but must write solutions on their
own.
