Modular forms (and where to find them)

Abstract:

Modular forms are ubiquitous mathematical objects. Roughly speaking, they are functions in the complex upper half plane satisfying certain symmetry properties. More importantly, they occur naturally in connection with many problems in different areas of mathematics, e.g., number theory, geometry, mathematical physics, etc. In this talk, I will give a brief introduction to the theory of classical modular forms while providing examples of various applications.
