The UC San Diego Department of Mathematics presently only guarantees employment as teaching assistants (TA’s) to its doctoral students. However, usually excess need for TA’s in the Department means that a terminal master’s student might be able to gain a TA position if the student satisfies the minimum language standard and academic preparation for the topic of the course.

If there is a need for TA’s in an upcoming term, typically an announcement will be emailed to all master’s students in the Department. A master’s student’s ratings on teaching evaluations play a dominant role in determination of future hirings.

For more information on being a TA, contact the Department’s director of student services, Scott Rollans (srollans@ucsd.edu).
