Math 296 - Graduate Student Colloquium

Alireza Salehi Golsefidy

UCSD

Finitely generated linear groups and their applications in number theory, combinatorics, topology, etc.

Abstract:

I will explain part of my journey in this beautiful subject: * Super-strong approximation and its applications to other areas of math. * Counting lattices. * Ratner's theorems and its applications to number theory. In each one of these topics, some open problems will be mentioned. (Disclaimer: Most likely one of these topics will be discussed only briefly because of time restriction.)
