Low-dimensional structure in high-dimensional data

Abstract:

T T O P $quad$ R E C R U I T M E N T In recent years, vast quantities of scientific data have been generated in various disciplines, thanks to the almost universal use of computer technology. What are we to do with this data? Can we find simple ways of understanding complex data? I discuss two areas of recent research into this problem: ($1$) nonlinear dimensionality reduction; ($2$) topological estimation.
