Mixed finite element formulations and differential complexes

Abstract:

The choice of a proper finite element space is essential to guarantee the stability of a discretised system of partial differential equations. In many cases, the differential geometric structure of the system can be captured by a differential complex, and finding an appropriate discrete differential complex may lead to a finite element space which yields a stable discretisation. Two problems, one from electromagnetism and the other from elasticity, will be discussed in this context.
