In the past decade or so, several big conjectures in number theory have been proven, starting with Fermat's Last Theorem and including the recent proof of the so-called Sato-Tate conjecture. All these advances involve proving that something is modular. I will try to explain what some of these conjectures/theorems say and what it means for something to be modular.
