Solving cubic equations -- an introduction to the Birch and Swinnerton-Dyer conjecture
Abstract:
I will introduce cubic curves in the context of solving equations. I will then motivate and describe aspects of the Birch and Swinnerton-Dyer conjecture, which predicts exactly when a cubic curve has infinitely many solutions over the rational numbers. This talk should be accessible to anybody with an interest in mathematics. \vskip .1in \noindent Refreshments will be provided!
